Celebrating Survivors of Suicide on "Survivor Day"
Dance Your Grief Away is an Annual 24-hour global virtual dance marathon brought to you by the Kelvin Mikhail Suicide Awareness Campaign - KMSAC (www.kmsac.info), which takes place annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving Day (U.S.A. holiday) honoring the day of "International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day" and "Survivor Day". This day was established by Congress for friends and family members of those who had someone transition from suicide to get together for comfort and support with virtual and in-person events in communities everywhere. Studies have shown that for every person who dies from Suicide at a minimum 6 people are impacted.
What is Dance Your Grief away - DYGA?
As part of surviving the transition of her only child's suicide in 2008, Gina Smallwood ( Chair, KMSAC), took a look back at the helm of her grief, and realized the connection and love of dancing was the “Holy Grail” that sustained her, along with talk therapy.
Through dancing, she found an enormous amount of beautiful memories shared with many ancestors, especially her son, affectionately known as “Mick”.
It is her hope to encourage people around the world to "Dance Your Grief Away" through emotional pain and recognize the day of International Suicide Survivor Day is a day to be celebrated, especially if you are a survivor and still alive to experience it. https://www.essence.com/authors/gina-m-smallwood-as-told-to-chandra-thomas-whitfield/
